IAM Union

Auto Truck Transport has a contract with the IAM Union, also known as the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers. Like many organizations, the guys at the bottom are the ones doing the most amount of work.

Our Districts and Locals put a large amount of effort on recruiting members, but unfortunately have little time to represent them. On the flip side, the International is mainly in charge of “maintaining” it’s ($50,000/mo) member base.

Basically, there is a fine line on how much representing a member can get, due to the amount of politics within the ranks. With this being said;

After 8 years with this company, I (we) have been gouged over $35,000 in lost wages. Auto truck has a history of shorting our mileage pay and the IAM has only allowed it to happen with a weak/manipulative contract. To make matters worse, driving is only half of our job!

After years of pursuing the mileage issue (and payroll issues), I finally get the IAM, (Anderson) to come to our terminal to resolve the matter. I had stacks of documentation showing him how much Auto Truck had been screwing us out of our mileage/wages.

The end result? The amount of my time gathering all this paperwork, the harrasment, the forced loads, the stress, the intimidation … all ended up something like this;

  • Boysen showed up a half hour before the meeting.
  • Called me a computer geek outside, after coming to him for suggestions on how to present our case.
  • Walked away while trying to show him three years worth of documentation proving the company was shorting us miles.
  • Showed him an article showing a non union company paying their employees Practical Miles. He tells me to go work for that company.
  • And then the meeting ends with him going to lunch, paid for by the company representatives!

Not only was this all a waste of time, but a punch in the gut for all that I have done for these guys. Ever since I became a shop steward for the IAM, my career has done nothing but go downhill and add more stress to my life.
